MTN Group announces executive appointments in Rwanda and Swaziland


The MTN Group is pleased to announce two executive appointments in its Rwanda and Swaziland operations. Themba Khumalo, currently the CEO of MTN Swaziland has been appointed as the new CEO of MTN Rwanda. Tebogo Mogapi, currently the Acting Executive: Consumer Business Unit at MTN South Africa, has been appointed as the new CEO of MTN Swaziland. Khumalo’s and Mogapi’s positions are effective on 1 April 2007.

Khumalo joined MTN in Swaziland in 1999 as the Chief Technical Officer and saw to the company’s successful network and services rollout. He acceded to the position of CEO in 2003 and has grown the subscriber base from 70 000 then to 255 000 as at 30 September 2006. During his tenure, MTN Swaziland also made significant strides with 83% geographic and 90% population coverage.

Khumalo has 26 years’ experience in telecommunications, which spans across the fixed and mobile landscape. He holds an MSc Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa in the United States. He began his career in 1982 at Swaziland Posts and Telecommunications Corporation and has held senior positions at MTN South Africa and Telkom.

Mogapi joined MTN South Africa in 2000 as a Regional Manager: Corporate and was deployed to MTN Nigeria in 2001 as a Channel Manager, responsible for setting up the distribution network. He advanced to successively assume the positions of Regional Manager: Eastern Region and later General Manager: Sales and Distribution, Eastern Region. In 2006 he returned to MTN South Africa to take up his current position in the Consumer Business Unit.

Says Phuthuma Nhleko, MTN Group President and CEO: “Part of the progress we are making to create a multinational organisation involves leveraging existing talent within MTN as well as attracting new individuals to the company.

“Themba has made a significant contribution to the steady growth of MTN Swaziland and I am confident that the extensive knowledge he has gained to date will add value to our operation in Rwanda. Similarly, I expect that Tebogo’s exposure to the various aspects of our business will assist him in his new position at MTN Swaziland, especially as we prepare for competition in that market.”
