MTN announces departure of Group Executive

The MTN Group regrets to announce that Irene Charnley will leave the company on 1 July 2007.

Charnley will join the MTN Group Board of Directors in 2008 and will retain a business relationship with MTN in her pursuit of opportunities in the telecommunications industry in Africa and the Middle East.

Says MTN Group President and CEO, Phuthuma Nhleko: “Irene has been an integral part of our executive management team and has played an invaluable role in the unfolding story of MTN. I am pleased that we can continue this association with Irene and wish her every success in her new endeavours.”

During her association with MTN, Charnley chaired M-Cell, a Johnnic Holdings company which later became MTN Group, for two years.

In her capacity as executive director of Johnnic Holdings Charnley was responsible for spearheading the MTN Group’s highly successful investment in Nigeria. From the time that she joined the MTN Group on a full-time basis as Commercial Director in 2001, she has also been instrumental in achieving MTN’s entry into Zambia, Congo Brazzaville, Cote d’Ivoire and Iran. She played a leading role in negotiating the acquisition by management and staff of an 18% stake in MTN.

Her current responsibilities as Vice-President for the Middle East North and East Africa (MENEA) will be integrated into the new Middle East region under the management of Vice-President Jamal Ramadan, a former Investcom executive.

Rwanda and Uganda, which also formed part of the MENEA region, will be integrated into the Southern region and managed by the Group COO, Sifiso Dabengwa, with effect from 1 April 2007.
